Italy is full of treasures to be uncovered and Abruzzo region is definitely one of its best-kept secret. Travellers don’t know what they have missed until they come and experience Abruzzo, at a just 1h drive from the eternal city of Rome (yes, one hour!). Abruzzo is located in central Italy and stretches from the heart of the Apennines to the Adriatic Sea. Its geographical makeup is quite remarkable; it is not surprising that Abruzzo provides a perfect haven for grape-growing. Vines flourish thanks to the terroir, warm daytime temperatures combined with cool evening winds; this provides a perfect mesoclimate for the vines. The star grape varieties of the area are the native red Montepulciano and white Trebbiano. The grape varietal Montepulciano has long roots in Abruzzo. It was already well noted and documented in the 15th century. With its ruby hue and cherry notes, it is full bodied and balanced. Written about Pliny, the Trebbiano grape has been cultivated for millennia and is one of the most diffuse in Italy, but the Trebbiano d’Abruzzo is the one most noteworthy and acclaimed. Straw colored with golden apple and dry fruit flavors, it pairs well with Abruzzo’s penchant for egg dishes, white meat (rabbit, duck and chicken are particularly used inland), and of course the coast’s seafood. Abruzzo a strong and kind region!
